Tears, sorrow and hope: Reports from The Breakfast Parlour held at #Okobaba

Have you ever seen over forty children fight over a pack of Cabin biscuits? Quite unlikely.  This was one of the first sights to welcome ‘The Breakfast Parlour’ crew to The Destitutes’ Home, Oko-baba on Sunday morning.

The next shocker was the announcement of a death to the crew . It probably was not the news of the death of the woman itself that shocked us, but the casualness about the announcement and the fact that nothing seemed amiss initially. From that point however, it occurred to the crew that death lived among these people.

The Destitutes’ Home was built fourteen years ago by the Buba Marwa administration to house homeless people; but somehow – many things seem to have gone wrong. They are abandoned – even though, some of the leaders say the government send in food once in a while. (The home is divided into three sections with individual leaders– Blinds, Lepers and Cripples)

These people need more than food. They have no water, they do not have access to free or qualitative health, no drainages (faeces float on the toilet floor and outside while all the water they use in the compound stays in the compound), no counselors (to advise on family planning/hygiene, the importance of education/ the need for the abled bodied ones to earn a living etc) amongst so many other things.

This ill advised, inhuman and sadistic 117% increase in price of fuel exposes the determination of the government to annihilate the poor Nigerian masses who are groaning under very deplorable conditions of living. A government that is incapable of rescuing its people from the abyss of economic ruins should not exacerbate the hapless situation of the suffering masses.

2. That the government institute a panel of inquiry that includes representatives of Labour, Civil society, professional bodies etc to investigate the practices of petroleum products importation, distribution and payments over the past 13 years.

3. That the report of this inquiry should form a basis for the prosecution of those individuals, companies and their collaborators who have defrauded the country through sharp practices associated with importation of petroleum products.

4. That the government ensures the four Nigerian refineries operate at installed capacities within the next 12months.

5. That the government unveil a Petrol Production and Distribution (PPD) policy that is aimed at 100% local production of petroleum products within the next 12-36months.

6. That the government audit and make public the Nigerian daily crude oil production, royalties paid by foreign oil companies, accurate local consumption inventory rather than the conflicting numbers released by various government agencies.

7. That corruption in the oil sector and other areas should be confronted and perpetrators brought to book. The poor masses should not be made to pay for the incompetence and corruption of government officials.

8. That the government should not underestimate the people’s ability and resolve to protest the continuous rape of the country by friends and cronies of government.

The Young Ilorin Protester Will Not Die In Vain!!

Without trying to go political on you guys but for the fact that these are the mediums to get our voices heard and to let the genral public know that we support the cause,the Ilorin protester will NOT die in VAIN!!!! aluta continua !!

Yesterday, news came in – now confirmed - that a 22-year-old Nigerian, Mustapha Muyeedeen Mofoluwasho Opobiyi, was shot down during the Ilorin, Kwara State protests in another unacceptable case of police brutality. While young Nigerians across the country are joined together in mourning for this terrible and entirely avoidable loss of another one of us, it lends an even greater urgency to the widely condemned removal of the infamous fuel subsidy through a press release by PPPRA.

The Federal Government of Nigeria would be mistaken to assume this will discourage other young Nigerians from taking to the streets or wherever else it takes to stand down this wrong-headed decision – if anything, the reactions will only be strengthened in his memory.

FELA DUROTOYE: DELIVER THE FUTURE

"Since I got back into Nigeria yesterday, I have heard some preposterous arguments that the removal of the fuel subsidy will be justified by wise investments that will benefit all.

My response has been...How will a wasteful government suddenly realize the genius of prudence and making the right investment decisions simply bcs there is more money available from oil subsidy removal?

Will there be less graft & bribes involved in process of issuing the road contracts or power contracts?

Have we sought to honestly find every way we can plug wastage in our leaking economy before we ask a feeble populace to carry the burden of corruption and gross ineptitude of a gluttonous few?
